There
was not a second to rest after the March Break at St. Brendan’s. We are
currently preparing many of our students for our school play “High School
Musical”. The play will be presented in early May. We are also preparing
for Catholic Education Week during the last week of April. The theme for
this week is “Called to Serve”. Many of our classes will be hosting
literacy presentations for parents during the school day to highlight the
achievements of our students in this particular subject area.
April had
our school hockey team completing their regional tournament at York
University on April 2nd. The team was placed in the top
division and displayed excellent sportsmanship but just failed to advance
to the Ricoh Coliseum for the City Championships. Our primary boys and
girls also competed in the Divisional Primary Soccer Championships during
early April. Both teams made it to the finals of their tournaments with
the girls’ team winning the championship banner! Way to go Bruins!
Our book
club continues to grow and the students are involved in reading books that
are included in the Blue Spruce, Silver Birch and Red Maple Award
program. Students get to vote for their
favourite
Canadian author once they have completed reading the minimum number of
books. Our hope is to increase the number of students in this book club
over the next few months and into the 2008-2009 school years.
We also
congratulate all of our grade two students as they received the Sacrament
of First Holy Communion during the April 12th & 13th
weekend. It was wonderful to see our students celebrating this special
Sacrament at St. Joseph’s Church.

It's the St. Brendan
Drum Club!
Last year we started a
drum club at our school for children in grade 6 which meets after class on
Tuesdays. Our goal is to foster a love for music and sensibility to
rhythm, to prepare them for the move to instrumental music in grade 7. We
work with hand and sticking percussion and children are introduced to both
tub and standard notation. This provides them with a strong theoretical
and practical base. In the spring, the children will have the opportunity
to learn drum kit rhythms and techniques.
Another goal of the club
is to serve as a window to other cultures through their instruments and
music. As an example we have already performed at two of our school
board's events: a First Nations Symposium in December and the opening
activities of the TCDSB Arctic Games this February. With the continued
support of our community, We hope to keep our rhythms rolling along in the
future.
