The most recent update - Manson site update November 2003( Nov. 03)

November 17, 2002
YOU ASKED: What's happening on the Manson Site? ( Nov. 02)

CCRA founder and Honorary Secretary Bill Dempsey writes to Jean Chretien, Mike Harris, and Mel Lastman with his suggestions for the Manson Lands.

From: City of Toronto, Building Division, East District

Manson Project Update: May 7, 2001
On April 3, 2001,during a site visit to the South Park Block B (formerly part of the Manson Site), an inspector from Peto MacCallum Ltd. (City's Peer reviewer) obtained from the surface of the fill material, samples of material that was suspected to contain asbestos. The test results show asbestos content of 15% to 35% in these samples and the detected asbestos is considered to be friable.

As a precaution, City staff has secured the subject area with tarp covers.

Toronto Public Health notes that the situation does not pose a risk to public health. MOE and MOL were also immediately advised of the test results.

While true, the report above avoided the embarrassment of telling what actually happened!

FLASH - update!!

From: City of Toronto, Building Division, East District

Manson Project Update: April 11, 2001
A. As noted in the Update dated April 6, 2001, the South Park Block B (formerly part of the Manson Site) has been locally impacted by asbestos contamination. The impacted area is fenced in and warning signs are posted.

City's Peer Reviewer has recommended that:
1. A program of soil sampling and laboratory analysis be carried out to delineate the soils containing asbestos.
2. The impacted areas be cleaned up with an air quality monitoring program and
3. A confirmatory soil sampling and testing program be conducted to ascertain site cleanup completion.

Candec Consultants in consultation with MOE, MOL, Toronto Public Health and the Peer Reviewer are preparing a site clean up program per these recommendations.

A meeting to brief the community representatives of the clean up program will be arranged and a notice to the Community Association (CCRA,PUVHA and WRCA) Presidents will be sent shortly.

B. MOE inspected the Manson Site on April 9, 2001, to obtain samples of material suspected of containing asbestos, in the vicinity of the dust collectors. The samples are being analyzed for asbestos content. Results of similar samples obtained by Candec Consultants are also expected shortly.

The CCRA were definitely not impressed with the findings!!

CCRA President Bob Baron wrote this letter to the Minister of the Environment, with copies to the Environment critics for the opposition parties.

The demolition is (virtually) completed. Thanks to Bernard Moore of Candec Consultants, we now have pictures taken inside the buildings and around the site while the project was in progress.

Thank goodness --- for the GO Train. Why??

Another 'we didn't think there was asbestos there' fiasco - at Port Union near Lawrence.
