Surprise!! - Asbestos still on site An e-mail sent by the City on May 22 provides the Manson Project Update of May 10, 2002 "Enclosed for your information is Manson Project Update: May 10, 2002. If you have any questions or concerns re this, please advise." From: City of Toronto, Building Division, East District Manson Project Update: May 22, 2002 1. By a letter dated May 21, 2002 (received by the City on May 22, 2002 and also copied to the MOEE), Candec Consultants have informed the City of the following: The Owners of the Manson Property have decided that they will remove all of the concrete from the property instead of crushing it and reusing it on site. Currently work is in progress to separate the portions of this concrete that have transite pipe attached to or stockpiled with them. After the separation process is complete, transite will be transported and received by Canadian Waste. The concrete will be sent to a recycling facility. Misting will be used to prevent the generation of significant volumes of dust. A hi-vol air sampler and aerosol monitor will be in use at all times that work is in progress at a location adjacent to and down wind from the loading zone. 2. The City has strongly recommended to Candec Consultants to obtain the necessary approvals from the MOEE and MOL before continuing this particular work. 3. The City is in the process of seeking additional information from the regulators and the proponent. This information will be provided to you as soon as it becomes available. Ed. notes: Look on the casual manner in which one finds out that asbestos has been on the site for many months after the community was told that the site had been cleaned. Transite pipe is designated as asbestos-containing material. Is it any surprise that this community thinks someone is pulling the wool over our eyes? And they've been doing so for years. How thoughtful of the owners of the site to decide against onsite crushing of the transite pipe stockpiled on site, so that the asbestos contained in it will not be released into your air. And in a related news update - the Ministry of the Environment doesn't know what's been happening on site? Read about that here |
