Manson Project Update: April 6, 2001 - background As reported by the City of Toronto's update, on April 3, 2001,during a site visit to the South Park Block B (formerly part of the Manson Site), an inspector from Peto MacCallum Ltd. (City's Peer reviewer) obtained from the surface of the fill material, samples of material that was suspected to contain asbestos. The test results show asbestos content of 15% to 35% in these samples and the detected asbestos is considered to be friable. What might not be obvious to anyone reading that update is that on March 29th, the CCRA Planning Chair received a copy of a letter a resident had sent to MPP Steve Gilchrist, describing his discovery of friable asbestos and transite pipe at the very southern end of the Manson site. The information was made known to all involved regulatory and supervising agencies.
Toronto's April 6 update fails to mention that the regulators had missed it twice (at least) and needed to be taken there by a local resident before they were able to notice the asbestos. As Aldous Huxley wrote: 'facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored' |
