CCRA PRESIDENT
Gay Cowbourne: February 1999

Every month, on page 3 of the CCRA NEWS, there is a box containing the names of the current Executive Committee members. Looking around the table at the first of this year's meetings, I realised what an excellent group of volunteers this community has elected to represent their interests throughout the year.

Introducing:-

Jeff Forsyth - Vice President: During his 12 years on the Executive, Jeff has held just about every position there is, including President, Vice President, Sports and Recreation Chair and member of the Activities and Planning. Committee. He's an invaluable mine of local information and procedural expertise.

Mike Osborn - Treasurer: During Mike's 11 years on the Executive, he has been the Planning Chairman and part of the Crime Prevention and Planning Committees. Mike has handled the CCRA finances for the last two years and our funds are in the best possible care. You should see the fantastic graphs and bar charts he creates every month!

Marilyn Hodge - Secretary: Marilyn is the 1999 Secretary, but this is not a new job for her. She was the Secretary and Treasurer for 3 years from 1973 to 1975. She was there for the CCRA's 25th anniversary and now she's back for the 50th!

Joe Pileggi - Past President: Joe was President of the CCRA from 1996 - 1998. Before that he was the Environmental Chair for several years and was very involved with the local asbestos problems. Once again, Joe is going to be "dabbling in asbestos". His legal expertise and past experience will be invaluable as he tackles the upcoming Ontario Municipal Board Hearing concerning the Manson property.

Bill Dempsey - Honorary Secretary: Bill was one of the founding members of the CCRA 50 years ago and he has been our greatest asset ever since. He is known and respected in this community and throughout the different levels of government. His wealth of experience and sound guidance have helped steer the many CCRA Executive meetings that he has attended during the last 50 years. We're thinking of changing his name to "Mr. CCRA"!

Brian Denton: Last year Brian was the Planning Chair. The year before that he joined the Executive and was one of the organisers of the CCRA Parade. Brian is back this year and will be helping out with the OMB, where required, as well as contributing his wealth of local knowledge and contacts.

Liz Bowers - Planning Chair: Although Liz is new to the CCRA Executive this year, she was very actively involved with all aspects of Planning matters during the recent Peppertree v. Developers fight. She gained a lot of invaluable experience which she is bringing to her new role on the CCRA Executive.

Alyson Buckingham: Alyson has been Secretary, Crime Prevention Chair and Membership Co-ordinator for the CCRA during her 11 years on the Executive. Back for another year, she is ready to assist wherever she is needed.

Dorothy Cleiff - Heritage Chair: Dorothy jumped in with both feet last year when she joined the Executive. She took over the Heritage issues and worked with City staff during discussions over the Laskey Hotel. She was also a member of the Waterfront Trail Committee. Dorothy already has her eye on sorting out a local heritage building which seems to have been sadly neglected.

Joan Gruchy - Community Events Chair: When Joan joined the Executive last year she quickly became involved in the planning of community events and fundraising issues. Joan was part of the Winterfest Committee and will represent the CCRA on the Earth Day and other local Committees.

Allan Jones - Editor CCRA NEWS: Allan has edited the newsletter for the last 8 years, before which he was the assistant editor. For each edition, Allan lays out the pages and ensures that they arrive at the printers' in time to be in your mailbox within the first few days of the month.

Tony Lamanna - NEWS Distribution: Distribution is the latest hat that Tony has agreed to wear during his 14 years on the Executive. Those of us who have attended any of Tony's '50s dances know what a wonderful job he does in organizing them. Thanks to Tony's annual fundraising efforts, the CCRA is many thousands of dollars richer!

Marg Penny - Communications Chair: During Marg's first year on the Executive in 1997, she casually suggested that the Heritage Day Parade be expanded. She then went on to make it the CCRA's own parade and the biggest and best ever. She topped that by making the 1998 parade even bigger and better again! Marg also worked tirelessly on the Pepper Tree Committee. This year, she has assumed the newly created position of Communications Chair.

Joseph Tabri - Advertising Chair: Joseph has recently joined the Executive and taken over the responsibility for the advertising in the CCRA NEWS. This is a big job and an important one - without the revenue from the ads we simply couldn't afford to publish the NEWS.

Mike White - Traffic Chair: When Mike joined the Executive in 1997 he quickly became interested in local traffic concerns. As Traffic Chair his role will become more and more important as we see the amount of traffic increase within the community. Mike is also a member of the Waterfront Committee.

Joy Wood - Crime Prevention Chair: This is Joy's second year on the Executive and this year she will ensure that you are kept aware of ongoing crime trends in this area as well as providing tips for keeping your home and family safe.

Special Mention - Andy Bowers, Webmaster: Andy came to the September '98 meeting with an unsolicited proposal for the CCRA's own Website. This was definitely not your average run-of-the-mill volunteer proposal! It was several spiral bound documents, complete with web page samples and graphics. What could we say, except a very loud "YES"? Since then, Andy has worked tirelessly to create an informative, amusing and up-to-date local information site which deserves a visit if you haven't already checked it out. Special Thanks go out to those Committee members who completed their term of office in December 1998 and have moved on to new, exciting enterprises. They are:-

Thelma Baker: Thelma began organising fundraising events and dances shortly after the CCRA was formed. She went on to become President in the late '70s and was instrumental in the process of acquiring our own Port Union Community Centre. Thelma organised Memberships, ran the CCRA's annual Elections, facilitated Public Forums and Open Houses ... in fact what didn't she do over the years? Thelma will no doubt continue to put just as much energy into her new adventures and will bring success to any group or organization fortunate enough to benefit from her involvement.

Sue Mallinson: After 14 years as a member of the Executive, Sue has finally decided to step aside. Sue held many Executive positions including 2 years as President, 3 years as Past President, Member of the Planning Committee, NEWS Advertising Manager and Membership Campaign Area Co-ordinator. Her boundless energy and commitment to this community are truly appreciated by all who had the pleasure of working alongside her.

Diana Hall: Diana served 2 years on the Executive as the NEWS Advertising Manager. Unfortunately, a busy life and new commitments have made it impossible for her to return this year but there's always the year 2000.......?

Bob Baron: After 2 years, Bob has had to bow out of the Executive because of meeting schedule conflicts. Bob was the Crime Prevention Chair last year and his voice will be missed around the meeting table.

The Centennial Community is a better place because of Thelma, Sue, Diana and Bob's voluntary contributions. Thanks from us all. We wish each of you success in your future endeavours.
