HERON PARK ARENA: Things are heating up with the Heron Park Renovation Plan.

In 1992, the City of Scarborough recognized that Heron Park was the number 1 facility in the City that needed to be fixed up. Staff prepared and submitted a proposal to Council as to how to deal with this problem. Based on the study, the City of Toronto allocated the requested $5.2 million to: tear down the old community centre and Parks building; and build a new ball diamond, outdoor water area, and gymnasium.

The problem is the City's study concluded there was/is nothing wrong with the arena. Therefore, no money is to be spent to fix it up. "Ridiculous" - Heron Park is the most dilapidated hockey structure in the city. Minimally, the rink needs new lighting, boards, glass, proper seating, heating and dressing rooms. In addition to safety concerns it is an embarrassment.

The West Hill Minor Hockey Association, which pays over $100,000 per year for ice rental and which for years has been asking for rink improvements and if possible a new facility, is very upset about this. Janet O'Leary, the President of the hockey association has expressed her dissatisfaction with the proposal. Most members of the community agree with Mrs. O'Leary. As a community we have needed a new facility since 1970. To ignore the need is terribly unfair. Stay tuned.

JAZZ FESTIVAL: We are moving closer to our Jazz Festival, Open long distance run (5k) for various age groups, and a possible skate board competition. We are checking our dates for availability.

SPECIAL NOTE TO THE COMMUNITY AND OUR ADVERTISERS: There are some loose ends we are tying up, but the CCRA News is now available on the Internet. In addition to our usual monthly news delivery we have entered cyber space courtesy of Andy Bowers. Furthermore, as an added bonus, our advertisers will have the benefit of going on the "Net" with us. (Come the New Year, special cyber-advertising rates will be set.)

A special thanks to Dr. Tabri for agreeing to be our new advertising person.
