This month we will be marking Earth Day on April 21st. Conservation Chair Chris Welch and Events Chair Heather Lemieux have been working with the committee planning this year’s events. Activities get underway at the Port Union Recreation Centre at 10 A.M. This is the one day of the year set aside to do something in our community for the environment. The main activity will be cleaning up the areas where debris and garbage have collected. There will be conservation and environmental displays at the Recreaction Centre. This is an event for all members of your family so plan to attend and pitch in to make our community clean and environmentally friendly.
On February 28th a Town Hall meeting was held with representatives from 43 Division Police Station. The event was well attended. Residents had a chance to hear from various sectors of the policing services regarding crime, traffic and crime prevention in our community. It was also an opportunity for residents to dialogue directly with the police regarding issues of concern to them. Thanks to Marilyn Hodge, our Community Policing Liaison Committee member for assisting in organizing this event along with representatives from West Rouge Community Association.
On March 7th the City held a community consultation meeting regarding a proposed subdivision development of 18 lots off Meadowvale Rd south of Wanita. The developer has applied to the OMB for approval of this subdivision. The hearing is scheduled to start April 25 at the OMB offices on Bay St. Nevertheless the city called the meeting to inform residents about details of the proposal and give them a chance to voice their concerns. Some resident were concerned about the size of some of the lots which are somewhat less than the lots surrounding the site. Councillor Ron Moeser indicated he would be proposing a motion to City Council that the city be represented at the OMB hearing. At this point (mid March) it is not known if the city will be present at the hearing and if they are what issues they will put forward. Any changes to the proposal will have to be presented before the Board who will make the decision on the proposal.
On March 31st we held our first Wine Tasting Evening featuring wine expert and TV host Shari Darling. We hope it was a fun filled evening for all those who attended. Events Chair Heather Lemieux will have a full report in our next newsletter.
Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate plan to install bleachers on the Mowat playing field this year. The school sent CCRA a request to provide some financial assistance towards the construction of these bleachers. At our March executive meeting approval was given to provide some financial support toward the purchase and installation of the bleachers. Financial assistance is also being provided by West Rouge Sports and Recreation as well as Mowat Collegiate. The bleachers are expected to be installed this spring and will be a much needed addition to the field for the comfort of spectators and players using the field.
Membership chair Tony Sibley is busy organizing our annual membership drive that gets underway in May.
