A reminder that Earth Day will be celebrated on Saturday April 22nd. CCRA executives Chris Welch and Heather Lemieux are helping to organize this event in our community. Please find some time during the day to attend and help clean up our community. There will be environmental groups and organizations with special displays at the Port Union Recreation Center. Be sure and drop by to learn more about how we can protect our environment. Details of the day’s activities are contained elsewhere in this newsletter. Plan to attend with your family and have everyone participate in this community event.
On Monday March 6th, along with some residents, I attended the City of Toronto Administration Committee meeting. The committee was dealing with the potential purchase of the Wanita School site from the Toronto District School Board. Along with another resident I made a deputation before the committee requesting that the city purchase this property. The committee deferred any action pending a report from the Parks and Recreation Department regarding budget allocations and parks expenditures across the city. The matter will return to the committee in early May.
We have done some further investigation of the electoral boundaries issue and all indications are that in the next provincial election in 2007 our area will be included in a riding with Pickering. While we don’t feel this is the best for our community there appears little can be done at this stage to change it. We will continue to monitor the process to effect input the next time the riding boundaries comes up for review.
